WHY BEYONCE ALWAYS MAKES US TURN DETECTIVE
NOTHING in this world, short of seeing a UFO, makes us embrace a conspiracy theory quite like Beyoncé. And today's internet rumblings are no exception.
Following the announcement last month that she is expecting twins with husband Jay Z, speculation about the imminent arrivals began. Was she expecting a boy and a girl because she wore a pink bra and blue pants in the announcement picture? Was she due in May because she keeps wearing jewellery containing emeralds (the birthstone for May)? And now, today, as she steps out in the same earrings she wore in the 2008 video for If I Were A Boy, she’s having twin boys – obviously.
In all fairness to the fan theorists, Beyoncé is not averse to stoking the flames of intrigue now and again. She had the Roman numerals VI, meaning four, tattooed on her ring finger long before she confirmed that she and Jay Z had married in secret. Was the number referring to her birthday, or to Jay Z's, or to their wedding date? All three it transpires. Also, her firstborn daughter, Blue Ivy, appeared to have a middle name that referenced the numerals - although, frustratingly, was born on the seventh.
Later, Beyoncé's song lyrics took centre stage as the world speculated, for perhaps just a little too long, who "Becky with the good hair" was. Meanwhile, Beyoncé sat amid the whirling rapids of speculation as serene as Botticelli’s Venus and just as beautiful.
Some might be frustrated by the constant guessing, but we don’t want to know the truth. Some things are better when they remain mysterious, and Beyoncé is definitely one of those things.
